Craftsmanship

Aari embroidery is a traditional Indian chain-stitch technique executed with a hooked needle (called an “aari”) that pulls thread from below the fabric to form continuous, fine chain stitches. This technique allows for intricate, flowing designs and can be worked much faster than standard satin stitch, enabling detailed embellishment such as beads and sequins. Aari embroidery originated in Gujarat, where it was initially practiced by leather-working artisans and later adapted to fabric, using a stretched frame and hooked needle to create fine chain-stitch motifs. The hooked needle used in Aari embroidery resembles a crochet hook and is used on fabric stretched over a frame (adda), enabling precision and speed in creating detailed motifs. A hallmark of Aari work is that beads and sequins are attached on the top side of the fabric, with the chain stitch formed on the same side, distinguishing it from European tambour techniques.
